The real story behind “My Neighbor Totoro”.

Thanks to hubby for sharing this "rumour" to me, things intriguing like this I will definitely not miss as I really enjoy reading from another perspective. :P

I'm sure you all know the story of Totoro, I don't need to post a synopsis here. Even though Studio Ghibli had denied of such a rumour, but I still stick to my own believes and insist that all the coincidence were not just... coincidence.

[source] - { Why is it a real story ?
• The rumour says that Totoro is the God of Death, so the persons that can see Totoro are actually close to death, or already dead. What that means for the story is that when Mei goes missing and a sandal is found in the pond, Mei actually drowned. When Satsuki is asked about the sandal she cannot face the truth and lies about it not being Mei’s sandal. So Satsuki goes on a desperate search for Totoro, calling for him and actually opens up the door the realm of the dead herself. With Totoro’s help she finds her dead sister and they together go to their mother’s hospital. There, the only one who actually noticed that the sisters were there, was the mother, who also soon is going to die.

And in the ending scene, Satsuki and Mei don’t have any shadows some says.

• The storytakes place in 狭山丘陵 (Sayama hills) where also 八国山病院 (Hachikokuyama Hospital) or 新山手病院 is, which is believed to be the model of the hospital where the mother is, 七国山病院 (Shichikokuyama Hospital).

There is also a murder-case (the Sayama incident) which has many scary coincidents with Tonari no Totoro. Especially that it all happened in May and both of the sisters names actually are May – Satsuki (五月), the name of the older sister that means May in Japanese and Mei (メイ), the name of the younger sister, which is how Japanese people pronounce May.

Furthermore, the fact that the little sister went missing and that both sisters later turned up dead. According to some rumors, the big sister saw her little sister’s corpse and went crazy and later should have mumbled something alike “I saw a ghost/monster cat (猫のお化け/化& #12369;猫)” and “I met a big raccoon” = Totoro, before committing suicide. }

So I'm just going to assume that Satsuki drowned, then May sort of sold her soul when she entered the cat bus to search for her sister. That's why the two of them actually passed away and the mother was the one that could see them. :) So it's like the cat bus took them to see their mom one last time. +_+

Although at the ending credits, the mother went home and the children continued playing with the rest. I believe this was just to give the movie a happy ending. :) Any points to add?

o.o I just watched this Japanese variety show on the Totoro urban legend (となりのトトロ都市伝説) on youtube.
and it's the same exact story! I couldn't help but get goosebumps from watching and reading the rumor!
It's scary how everything adds up!
They say that only children could see Totoro, but why couldn't Kanta see it??

Despite the rumors, I try not to think about it, I will always see Tonari noTotoro as beautiful and other Miyazaki works as inspiring films! :)

(There are so many other anime rumors tho><;)

OMG, I'm kinda creeped out liaoz. I wanted to watch this anime but after reading this, I'm too scared already. o_o The plot is so sinister and creepy. You mean, the artist actually drew this anime based on a true murder story? D:

This might explain why I thought Totoro was so scary... The movie has such a happy feel to it, but it still creeps me out. Totoro himself and the catbus especially.
Having read this, it makes sence... XD

*Maroppi, I don't mind hearing more anime rumours. :D I find them interesting~ Like some sort of hidden message. :P

*Ru Min, Miyazaki denied about the rumours.. but only because he doesn't want to creep children out I guess? :P After all it's one of the best selling films. x_x His mom was struck with tuberculosis which Miyazaki later paid her homage in "totoro". :)

*Metal_Minish, you must be pretty sharp then!! I have NO CLUE about it being even 0.1% scary. D;

the reason kanta couldnt see it is because a totoro only appears when a child is in trouble.
